Growing up, I would try pretty much anything for soft, shiny hair so I certainly experimented with my fair share of homemade (and mom-made!) hair masks. From applying amla oil, coconut oil, or henna to my hair to this one particularly messy Seventeen Magazine-inspired egg mask fiasco, I am no stranger to hair food experiments. Since one of my resolutions for 2018 is to become a bit more minimal with my hair routine, I thought I’d get a jump start by whipping up an old school, DIY avocado, olive oil and honey hair mask.
To be honest, I made this based on what I had in my kitchen. But it works and is soooo easy. I loved it and hope you do, too!
Wait, why should I do this?
Because you deserve a treat! And maybe you have an over-ripened avocado that you don’t want to waste:) You can use this year-round, but I think it is particularly comforting now in the colder months. The avocado moisturizes hair and infuses hair and skin-loving vitamin E to add shine and smoothness. The olive oil has essential fatty acids that actually penetrate the hair to add moisture and protect hair from breakage. Finally, the honey contains anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties to protect scalp and hair, and soothe itchy winter scalp; honey is also a natural humectant, which means it draws in moisture to the hair.
What do I need?
1 ripe (or even over-ripened) Avocado
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 tablespoon Honey
2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional, I use rosemary to stimulate hair growth)
What do I do?
Combine avocado, olive oil, and honey in a blender or with a hand mixer until a smooth consistency forms. Make sure all chunks of avocado are gone. Add essential oils (if you use them). Apply mixture to hair using hands or a hair colorist’s brush. Comb through with a wide-toothed comb (or whatever tool you prefer) to evenly coat strands. Cover head with a shower cap. Leave mask on hair for up to 30 minutes. Rinse well. Wash, condition, and style as usual.
Note: It is super, duper important to make sure you blend this well, or else you’ll be picking avo chunks out of your hair forever! I know from experience.
What if I have extra?
Use it as a face mask! For pretty much the exact same reasons avocado, honey and olive oil are wonderful for the hair, these ingredients are also great for your skin. For a moisturizing treat this winter, apply the mixture to clean skin, being careful not to get any in the eyes. Leave on for 10 minutes, and then rinse. For those with sensitive skin (or nostrils!) be cautious – I would be sparing or even omit the essential oil if you do plan to do a face mask. I had no issues with rosemary (which is known to have many skin-friendly benefits), but it is better to be safe than sorry.
I hope you can try this and enjoy this little treat! What are your favorite DIY hair masks? Let me know in the comments below!
